Another discussion about feminism with players in World of Warcraft. Is it against human nature for women to be good at or interested in playing video games?
Another discussion about feminism with players in World of Warcraft. Are women inherently better healers?
More on the hiring discrimination discussion. Hiring manager at HVAC company discusses periods as a valid excuse for not hiring women. But yes it’s ok, he loves women. Another (female) player gets quite frustrated with his remarks.
When a discussion about feminism drifts into a discussion about hiring procedures and occupational discrimination.
A more long-form look at what this project is developing into and how it functions. Much less sensational compared to the screenshots. This direction is likely the future of this project.
"Playing A Girl", 2013
I ask male players rolling female toons why they do that. I also ask several female players about feminism…and get surprising results.
I’ve been getting a lot of comments like “WHY WOULD YOU ASK PPL IN WOW ABOUT FEMINISM, THEY ARE GOING TO TROLL YOU DUH STOP WASTING YOUR TIME” lately.
To the haters (<3): I get interesting, sincere responses sometimes which lead to pretty intense discussions! These responses reveal a lot about suppressed ideologies of American society from incredibly varied cross sections of the US (economically, socially, occupationally, geographically, sexually, and ethnically diverse!). In this instance…feminism is linked to communism! It is fairly easy to tell when I’m being trolled as well, and I have been quite impressed by the willingness of players to discuss sensitive topics like abortion, sexuality, why men play female characters, abuse, racism, and much more. So don’t doubt the courage of your own community. I also am not looking for perfect answers or outrageous ones - I’m looking for honest accounts of why people react the way they do to a word that no one really understands- asked in a space where these discussions are especially not happening.
[aside] Thank you for those that have pointed this out as an invalid use of my time, that is completely fair of you to say from your perspective :). But ultimately how we use our time and the value of our pursuits is up to each of us to determine on our own grounds. THX!
